So this is going to be my first official blog post about my weight loss journey and I thought long and hard about what topic I wanted to tackle first. So I though back to what made this attempt at weight loss successful compared to other attempts that I had made in the past and it became clear to me that I needed to address the most important thing you need to start your own journey.
Now as many of you may know, from struggles with your own body image / weight, so many of us try to push our bodies to extremes in hopes of achieving perfection, and fail over and over again. We go on all sorts of diets that seem promising and yet end up pushing our goals even further away from us. We stop eating and starve our selves and then end up binge eating the whole kitchen. Sound familiar?
Well I was so tired of that cycle of constant hunger and then over stuffing myself, that I decided to stop my obsession with weight loss. I stopped caring about how I looked and started caring about how I felt and this became the foundation for the journey I am on now. That meant I no longer went on unrealistic diets. If I was hungry, I ate and if my body craved for something, I indulged. Slowly but surely, listening to my body made me more attuned to what my body actually needed. I could now differentiate between actual hunger and just plain old boredom. I was more aware of what foods made me feel good versus what made me feel groggy inside. My metabolism was faster, I didn’t feel tired all the time and I could be in the same room as my favorite food and not binge eat the whole container. And I cannot stress enough how huge this was for me.
So here is my advice for those of you who want to achieve healthy, long lasting weight loss: stop caring about weight loss. Stop obsessing over how much weight you want to lose and start caring about how you are treating your body. Once you can stop unhealthy eating and lifestyle habits, your weight loss goals will be much easier to achieve. Now I want to mention here that when I say stop caring I do not mean stop caring and eat take out from taco bell all day long; I mean eat healthy and nutritious food to nourish your body. Incorporate more fruits, vegetables and protein into your diet. Choose healthy carbohydrates instead of processed carbohydrates that do not give you any nutrition. Drink lots of water and stay away from carbonated drinks like soda. Start each day with a hearty breakfast which will set the tone for the rest of the day.
These are just simple and easy tips that will help your body reset out of the dieting starvation mode (a blog post coming on this soon!). It will help you jump start your metabolism and set the foundation for a successful weight loss journey. But most importantly, it will put you in the right mindset to achieve your weight loss goals. Following these simple steps will help you change your mindset towards weight loss and dieting from something that is tiresome, stressful and depressing to something that makes you feel good. That is what creating a healthier and happier lifestyle is all about.
After resetting your body, the next step in your journey should be about creating a sustainable caloric deficit to begin your weight loss. I will be taking about this in my next blog post, so stay tuned.
